Useful budget tips for the world traveler

A lot of people miss out on traveling merely because, in their mind, they believe it to be too heavy on their bank accounts.  However, that isn’t always the case.  Just ask any veteran traveler.

Cashier Myricks has learned from his many experiences that traveling need not be an expensive endeavor.  In fact, there are many ways for people to save up to hundreds, sometimes even thousands of dollars on a trip.

On that note, Cashier Myricks shares some of the best budget hacks he’s learned from experienced travelers in the past.

Unless your main purpose for visiting an area is to stay in a hotel, don’t stay in a hotel.

This is probably the one hack that will save you the most dollars, Cashier Myricks notes.  There is a world of difference between the price of a night’s stay at a fancy hotel and a night in hostels, apartments, and Air BnB.  If your main purpose isn’t really to experience a stay at a fancy hotel, avoid it at all costs.

As much as possible, never buy food near tourist spots.

Most food establishments near monuments, parks, and other tourist locations are notorious for having very-high prices with very-low quality.  It’s best that you prepare and bring your own food (if it’s allowed), look elsewhere for good local cuisine, or, better yet, ask locals where the best, most-affordable restaurants can be found.  Locals know better places that are also much cheaper.

Pack light.

Packing light is a skill people learn as they go on more trips.  This not only lessens the hassle of carrying heavy luggage; it also allows travelers to have a lot more room for souvenirs later on.  Moreover, traveling with light luggage lowers the chances of being charged for excess weight.

Avoid taxis if you can.

In most, if not all countries, taxi rates, especially for foreigners are a killer.  Public transportation is the way to go.  Trains and buses will always be cheaper.  This is why Cashier Myricks has always recommended that travelers first learn about the public transportation system of a country to avoid paying ridiculous prices for a cab ride.

Also, avoid airport money changers.

Airport money changers have the worst exchange rates in town.  What you can do is change money at your local bank a few days before going on a trip.  Converting large amounts of cash in an airport money changer can set a person back hundreds, even thousands, of dollars.
